Bangladeshi Paan Chini in the UK: Planning the Gathering, the Paan Taal and the Sweets

If both families have started talking about a date for the Bangladeshi paan chini (পান চিনি), begin with the decisions you make together: what you call it, who hosts, who comes and what goes on the paan taal (the tray). Only official pages can answer two further points, the betel leaf import listing for where you live in the UK and what the NHS says about paan.

The short answer

Spellings you may search for include panchini, paan-chini, sini paan, pan chini, chini paan and cinipaan; paan chini is the spelling used here. The name, the host and the order of events are questions for the two families. For betel leaf, GOV.UK lists foodstuffs containing or consisting of betel leaves from Bangladesh among foods with import controls, in guidance updated 10 July 2026 that applies to England and Wales.  Scotland has its own regulations, made in 2025 and in force from 1 January 2026, that list food containing or consisting of betel leaves from Bangladesh among foods with special conditions for entry (checked 23 October 2026). The NHS says chewing paan raises the risk of cancer, including without tobacco.

What does “paan chini” mean?

Paan (পান) is the Bengali word for betel leaf.  Chini (চিনি) is the Bengali word for sugar. Those are word meanings only. One encyclopedia entry on customs in Bangladesh lists panchini among the rituals before the wedding ceremony and says it signifies the conclusion of negotiations.  That entry says nothing about what your family calls the gathering, who hosts it or how it runs in the UK.

What should the two families agree first?

If a nani or chacha has already suggested a date, a few questions are worth settling before anyone books anything. Customs differ by family, region, religion and generation, and UK families may adapt them differently. You could ask each other:

  • What does each family call the gathering?
  • Who hosts, and who visits whom?
  • Who is invited: parents and elders, or the wider family too?
  • Is it its own gathering, or part of another event such as a visit, a ring exchange or a date-fixing meeting?
  • Where does it sit before the other wedding events?

Once you agree, place it on Wedvisa’s free planning timeline.  Our guide to planning a Bangladeshi wedding in the UK covers the wedding events around it. If your families are also planning a nikah and walima, our nikah and walima guide goes into them. Once you know who is invited, you have the headcount for the next section.

Guests, venue and budget

The paan chini can sit in Wedvisa’s guest list manager as its own event. The manager holds names, RSVPs and dietary notes in one place, so this gathering keeps its own headcount.  Our guide to guest lists across a multi-day Bangladeshi wedding covers per-event lists. The paan chini can also have its own line in the budget calculator. Who pays for what needs agreeing between the two sides before anyone books.

The gathering might be at home, in a hall or at a restaurant, and our venue guide has more on the wider search. Rajboy, a restaurant on Commercial Road in London E14, lists Chini-paan among its private event types (seen 23 October 2026). If you have a hall or restaurant in mind, ask whether it takes a booking like this. Once headcount and place are settled, the paan taal is the next decision.

Should you make or order the paan taal and the sweets?

If a khala or phupu has already offered to make the taal, you may not need a maker at all. If you prefer to order one, you can ask each maker:

  • What does the taal include?
  • Does the quote cover the sweets and the betel leaf?
  • How much notice do you need?
  • What is the total price, and is delivery included?
  • Are the sweets coming with the taal, or is someone bringing them separately?
  • Can supari (areca nut) be left off or added on request?

According to a Hyphen article from January 2026, one paan maker in West Yorkshire, The Paan Company in Dewsbury, leaves tobacco out of its paan and adds supari for customers who ask.  For the sweets, our Bangladeshi wedding desserts guide helps you plan what to serve. If the quote includes betel leaf, the next section sets out what the official import pages say about leaf from Bangladesh.

Import listings for betel leaf from Bangladesh

England and Wales guidance and the Scottish regulations are separate texts, so read the one for where you live in the UK. In England and Wales, GOV.UK says restricted products can only be imported through designated border control points, with documentary checks and sampling and analysis or examination before a consignment is cleared. It also says controls either set conditions of import or suspend imports depending on risk. The GOV.UK page does not say which of these applies to betel leaf from Bangladesh. GOV.UK adds that importing food businesses are responsible for making sure their food complies, and that its page is a guide.  Your supplier is the one to ask how the leaf reached the UK. The Scottish regulations are cited here as made, and you can look on legislation.gov.uk for any later changes.

The pages above do not cover Northern Ireland.  If you are there, ask your supplier how the leaf reached Northern Ireland and which checks it went through.

What does the NHS say about paan and areca nut?

The NHS describes paan as a mixture of betel (areca) nut, herbs, spices and often tobacco wrapped in a betel leaf. It says smokeless tobacco such as paan raises the risk of mouth and oesophageal cancer and that studies have found betel itself can raise the risk of cancer, so chewing betel quid without tobacco is still harmful. The NHS wording covers chewing paan and makes no statement about a ceremonial tray.

If anyone in either family has a view on supari, left off or added, you can ask the maker for either.

Paan chini checklist

These tasks fit in Wedvisa’s free wedding checklist.

  • Agree the name, host, guests and place with both families.
  • Add the paan chini to the guest list manager as its own event.
  • Give it its own budget line.
  • Ask venues whether they host the gathering.
  • Place it on the planning timeline.
  • Decide whether to make or order the taal.
  • If ordering, ask about contents, sweets, betel leaf, notice, price and delivery.
  • Agree whether supari is left off or added.
  • Check the betel leaf listing for where you live in the UK.
  • Ask your supplier how the leaf reached the UK.

Questions about the paan chini

Is a paan chini the same as an engagement?

There is no single answer, and what your two families call it is theirs to agree. One entry on customs in Bangladesh describes panchini as signifying the conclusion of negotiations; it does not describe UK practice.

Can you use betel leaves from Bangladesh?

GOV.UK’s England and Wales listing and Scotland’s regulations both list betel leaves from Bangladesh among foods with import controls or special conditions. The listing for where you live in the UK is the one to read, and your supplier can say how the leaf reached the UK.

Should supari be on the tray?

The NHS says chewing paan raises the risk of cancer, including without tobacco. If you order, the maker can tell you whether supari can be left off or added.

How much does a paan taal cost?

Ask each maker for a written quote that says what the taal includes, how much notice they need, and whether the sweets and the betel leaf are covered.
